Portpatrick - Black Guillimots

The Summer plumage and colours of the Black guillimot is quite striking. Also they are very active birds making them ideal subjects for the wildlife photographer. It is one of the European Auks that you see along the Scottish coasts, but in Portpatrick, Dumfries & Galloway, this little bird can be found in the harbour area. There are at least 8 birds that nest in the harbour walls.

The problem of photographing the birds in the harbour is that it is very difficult to get at eye level with the birds. You are always looking down on the birds as they swim between the boats. I spent a couple of hours watching them and their behaviour planning where best to photograph them. Not happy with the height problem, I was asked one of the local fishermen if I could sit on his boat to take some photos, he kindly obliged and so I was able to get some better angles as the birds flew in.

As the day progressed the light became even more dramatic and created stunning colour on the water.

If you can get down to this beautiful little village, it would be worth spending some time here with the sea birds.

Next time I will take my inflatable canoe and get even lower images close to the water. Well that's the plan anyway.
